When a new drug gets tested, the results of the trials should be published for the rest of the medical world — except much of the time, negative or inconclusive findings go unreported, leaving doctors and researchers in the dark. In this impassioned talk, Ben Goldacre explains why these unreported instances of negative data are especially misleading and dangerous.

Health value of Omega-3 supplements is increasingly questioned

New drug candidate in diabetes research breakthrough

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

CSL Limited has developed a new drug candidate that is able to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes and reverse its progression in animal models of the disease.

The drug candidate blocks signalling by a protein known as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor B (VEGF-B) and this prevents fat from accumulating in the “wrong” places, such as in muscles and in the heart. As a result, cells within these tissues are once again able to respond to insulin and blood glucose is restored to normal levels. This represents an entirely new approach to the treatment of type 2 diabetes and a paper outlining this breakthrough has just been published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature.

Vitamin D deficiency increases risk of heart disease

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

New research from the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital shows that low levels of vitamin D are associated with a markedly higher risk of heart attack and early death.

Vitamin D deficiency has traditionally been linked with poor bone health. However, the results from several population studies indicate that a low level of this important vitamin may also be linked to a higher risk of ischemic heart disease, a designation that covers heart attack, coronary arteriosclerosis and angina. Other studies show that vitamin D deficiency may increase blood pressure, and it is well known that high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack.

Free online courses will change universities

See on Scoop.it - Studying Teaching and Learning

The internet revolution has moved to education as top universities worldwide rush to put free courses online, setting up so-called massive open online courses or MOOCs. Higher education’s traditional business model is under threat as learning from the world’s most prestigious academic experts is available to anybody with a computer and broadband access.
Two top Australian universities, Melbourne and Queensland, have joined in. The University of Melbourne announced last Wednesday its partnership with Coursera, a leading US-based provider of free online university courses. The University of Queensland will shortly announce a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) office of educational innovation and technology to use MOOC courses to both offer free courses to the public online and simultaneously its educational offering to on-campus students.

Living with Your Introvert

A guide to care and feeding…

Introverts feed on silence like extroverts feed on words. Silence is necessary to sustain us, just like food, and without enough of it, we get weak. We’re not shy, we just don’t see the need to work out ideas with others when we have a perfectly good conversation going on in our heads. So, how can introverts develop the rich social lives that produce health and happiness if we talk less to others?

How a Video Game Assists the Visually Impaired

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

There are two things that make optometrist and neuroscientist Lotfi Merabet’s new computer game unusual: The various rooms and corridors in the game exactly mirror a real place, and players aren’t able to navigate by looking at graphics on-screen. Instead, players must rely entirely on different sounds that tell them where doors, walls, jewels and monsters lay in wait.

Merabet and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School and the University of Chile designed the game for — and tested the game with — visually impaired people. And they found something interesting about their players when they later took the gamers to the real building on which the game was based. Although the researchers hadn’t told the study participants to remember the game’s layout, they found that those who played the game excelled at independently navigating the real building.

The researchers’ study shows the promise of audio maps helping to solve a real problem for the blind, said Gordon Legge, who directs the Laboratory for Low-Vision Research at the University of Minnesota, is visually impaired, and was not involved in Merabet’s study. “People who are visually impaired are often anxious about going to new places. That’s a big issue,” Legge said. “If there were software methods to explore and learn a place before they go, it could be quite advantageous.”

How Is Social Media Changing Diplomacy?

See on Scoop.it - Studying Teaching and Learning

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton advocates for what she calls “twenty-first century statecraft,” the use of technology and social media by ambassadors and their staff to connect and engage with their local communities. But can Facebook and Twitter really change the art of diplomacy?

That was one question posed to Deputy Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs for Digital Strategy at the State Department Victoria Esser, Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Mexican Ambassador to the United States Arturo Sarukhan Casamitjana and American Ambassador to Zimbabwe Charles Ray during a panel at the 2012 Social Good Summit.

“Social media] is an integral part of how we’re conducting our diplomacy around the world, said Esser. “We have 300 Twitter profiles, 400 Facebook pages. To me, it’s about creating virtuous circles online and offline — nothing will replace face-to-face diplomacy, but social media is an important way to connect with people and cut away time, distance and diplomatic rank barriers and have a real conversation.”

» Adults with Autism Have Unreliable Neural Responses

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Matters

A new study, published in the journal Neuron, reveals that autistic adults have unreliable neural sensory responses to visual, auditory and somatosensory (touch) stimuli.

This poor response appears to be a basic characteristic of autism.

Up until now research on what causes atypical behaviors in autism has focused primarily on specific brain regions without necessarily tracing back to the brain’s fundamental signaling abilities.

Now, neuroscientists at Carnegie Mellon University have taken the first steps toward deciphering the connection between general brain function and behavioral patterns in autism.

A widely publicized study claiming that there is no demonstrated difference in nutritional value between organically and conventionally grown foods just appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Broad mainstream media coverage produced headlines like Stanford Scientists Cast Doubt on Advantages of Organic Meat and Produce. The media failed to mention one point that may be of major interest.

The study relied on a statistical technique called meta-analysis. Over 200 plus scientific journal articles were combined as the data set for the study. The article co-author with recognized expertise in meta-analysis, Ingram Olkin, applied for a grant from Council of Tobacco Research (CTR) in 1976.

What seems to be underappreciated in this country is how actively the Asian systems are trying to embrace the values and outcomes that we appear to be so willing to abandon: specifically, the American penchant for promoting creativity, individualism, innovation, and nonconformity. In other words, for developing and nurturing the diverse talent that can result from an ethos of coloring outside the lines.

(Medical Xpress)—One in 88 children has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A new study by a University of Missouri researcher found that many children with ASD also experience anxiety, chronic gastrointestinal (GI) problems and atypical sensory responses, which are heightened reactions to light, sound or particular textures. These problems appear to be highly related and can have significant effects on children’s daily lives, including their functioning at home and in school.

According to a newly released study by the New America Foundation, “In the future, consumers wishing to subscribe to higher speed Internet services will likely face a near monopoly from cable providers, as telephone providers have halted wide-scale upgrades of their networks.”

To make matters worse, major cable companies don’t compete with each other in local markets, which they have effectively divided up. The result, as the study concludes, is that in many places, you will soon only have one choice when connecting to the Internet.
