Startup Udacity Builds Bankroll for Online Learning

See on Scoop.it - Studying Teaching and Learning

Pessimism about education is easy to find. Sebastian Thrun is a pretty persuasive antidote, and the funding seems to be following.
On Thursday, Udacity is announcing a $15 million venture-capital round led by the ubiquitous Andreessen Horowitz. The new infusion brings its total raised to date to $21.5 million.
Udacity, which is frequently mentioned along with other new-wave education startups like Coursera, is pursuing a vision that has some fresh elements.
First, the company is out to reach hundreds of thousands of students at a time around the world, a goal that really wasn’t technically or financially feasible until recently.
Second, the courses are free, at least for now. (Udacity gets some of its revenue by finding employees for tech companies, Thrun says).
Third, as Thrun stresses, Udacity is bringing a different style of pedagogy. It is not simply putting boring, linear lectures on the Internet. Students learn by solving problems and getting instant feedback on how they performed–by doing, rather than listening, Thrun says.

Kids With Electronic Devices in the Bedroom Are More Likely to Be Obese

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

Researchers find out that children with access to electronic devices are more likely to be obese or overweight.

In what might be the first study that connects the dots between sleep, diet and physical activity among kids, Canadian researchers have found that adding just one hour of extra sleep decreases the chances of being overweight or obese by around 30%.

“If you want your kids to sleep better and live a healthier lifestyle, get the technology out of the bedroom,” said Paul Veugelers, a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta in Canada, and a co-author of the paper.

A Town Turned Classroom: How a Focus on Farming...

gjmueller:
A Town Turned Classroom: How a Focus on Farming Saved a Rural Kansas School
Educational achievement in rural America is one of the country’s great overlooked challenges. Rural students achieve below the U.S. average on national tests, and high school dropout rates are higher and college attendance lower than they are in cities and suburbs. When the U.S. Department of Education asks low-achieving schools to be turned around, rural educators usually say they lack options: schools in many communities can’t be closed because there are no other choices, and populations are too thin to support charter schools. But the Walton Rural Life Center, serving a population that has many of these problems, shows that there is genuine promise for rural charter schools – if, like Walton, they have the will and the imagination to try new approaches and to take advantage of the unique strengths of their communities.

Two Nutritional Supplements Could Be Effective Treatments for Autism

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Matters

Two promising new treatments for autism have shown effectiveness in pilot studies. Several studies indicate that children with autism often have abnormalities in critical biochemical functions that help maintain health – specifically methylation, glutathione, and mitochondrial functions.

But “these therapies appear to be safe and effective supportive therapies for restoring methylation, glutathione and ATP to near-normal levels in the body, and are likely to help children with autism who experience problems maintaining normal functions,” he says.

Low calcium diet linked to higher risk of hormone condition in women

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

A low calcium diet is associated with a higher risk of developing a common hormone condition in women, known as primary hyperparathyroidism, suggests a study published on BMJ website today.

Primary hyperparathyroidism or PHPT is caused by overactive parathyroid glands secreting too much parathyroid hormone, which can result in weak bones, fractures and kidney stones. In recent years, several studies have also suggested a link between untreated PHPT and an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

FBI Warns of Malware Targeting Android Phones

See on Scoop.it - Transformations in Business

The Internet Crime Complaint Center is warning smartphone users of malware that targets Android operating systems.

“Loozon” and “FinFisher” are the latest known versions of this type of malware, according to the IC3, which investigates Internet-related criminal complaints. The organization is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Nation White Collar Crime Center.

The malware lures victims in different ways. One advertises itself as a “work at home” opportunity that promises a lucrative payday just for sending out email; an attached link then leads to a website that spreads Loozon to its target.
